DIY workshop: vegetable dye with avocado

Teinture textile végétale et naturelle à base de peau et noyau d'avocat

Here’s a simple, natural way to transform t-shirts, tea towels, diapers… Dyeing with avocado skins is foolproof, provided the fabric chosen is made from natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk, linen). The resulting shades range from light pink to intense brown, with delicate shades of old rose or eggshell.

It’s very easy to make, as there’s no need to mordant the textile (a step which involves preparing the fabric beforehand, with alum salt for example, so that the color adheres). Avocado skin is very rich in tannins, which fix the dye, and naturally contains a red pigment that lasts over time.

I experimented with vintage embroidered cotton napkins. For a first-timer, I’m very pleased with the result!

Teinture textile à base d'avocat
FOR DYEING, YOU WILL NEED :
  • Avocado skins and pits (minimum 6)

  • 1 tablespoon bicarbonate for an old-pink color or 1 tablespoon white vinegar for an olive-brown hue

Scrape and wash the avocado skins (which you’ll keep as you eat, so they’ll dry in a corner of the kitchen until you’re ready to use them).

On the big day, boil the avocado skins and whole pits in water in a stewpot for at least an hour.

Soak textiles in clear water for 1/2 hour before dyeing.

Strain the decoction, return it to the pot and plunge the damp, wrung-out tissues into it.

Add bicarbonate or vinegar, depending on the shade you want. Return to a gentle boil, between 1/2 and 1 hour, depending on the desired intensity. I left it to heat for 40 minutes.

Machine on your usual cycle. The dye is fixed! Run an empty rinse cycle after dyeing to rinse your machine and avoid the risk of dyeing your laundry during the next wash.
